Reaching out to the local community
Haslemere Community Station is a volunteer-led group working with the train operator (South Western Railway), the infrastructure provider (Network Rail ), the Community Rail Network and other local partners to enhance the interface between the railway and its public.
We're keen to enhance the community aspect of the group, and welcome suggestions of appropriate projects we could consider plus, of course, more volunteers to assist in the delivery of all our projects.

So far:
- A major part of Haslemere Community Station's outreach progamme involves local primary schools. Our Try the Train initiative with our partners gives children the confidence to travel safely by train – especially if their next place of learning is in another town. It also equips them for a lifetime of rail safety. This initiative has grown into the Rail Safe Wessex project, launched in September 2024 during an event at our Information Hub. The event, attended by managers from South Western Railway, Network Rail and the Community Rail Network , included presentation of Rail Safe plaques to local primary schools Camelsdale, St Bartholomew's and Shottermill. - We've added colour to the station area through several pictorial displays both on the station and in bus shelters nearby. These displays feature scenery within easy reach of the station – and underline our association with Surrey Hills National Landscape, the South Downs National Park and the National Trust.
- On the station itself, our volunteers take pride in maintaining horticultural displays in the planting beds between platforms 2 and 3. New volunteers to assist with this are especially welcome.
